Our Story

Ropp Violins are made to produce unparalleled tone, resonance, response, and projection. Each of our instruments are crafted individually with an attention to detail and a single-minded focus on sound quality and aesthetics. These violins boast a beautiful sound not found in any other contemporary or antique violin.

Our violins are built by James Ropp and his daughter Michelle Ropp, who have both been trained as violinists in both classical and fiddle styles. These violins are made with techniques researched from old Cremona master luthiers, alongside new innovations which improve sound quality and tone. Don't take our word for it, though. Listen to our instruments. Compare them side-by-side. We fell in love with this rich, uninhibited sound, and we think you will, too.

Our Luthiers

A lifelong violinist, James has restored violins for many years and studied the techniques of old Cremonese masters. James began making his own violins in search of a more perfect sound. In his quest he has debunked many methods and theories, and has discovered how to make violins with extraordinary sound. His violins have unparalleled projection, clearer sound, richer overtones, and improved response.

James has produced violins that received high acclaim and out-perform contemporary violins and older, more famous instruments. His violins have been requested personally for solo concerts and symphony performances alike.

James's violins will be entered in the 2018 VSA International Makers' Competion, and he plans to be an exhibitor at the 2018 Contemporary Violin Makers Exhibition in New York.

Michelle Ropp

Like James, Michelle has studied both classical violin and fiddle. She has played throughout her life in small ensembles and orchestras, and has competed at Northwest Orchestra Festival competitons and the WMEA State Solo and Ensemble Contest. She is a passionate artist as well who works with acrylic and watercolor paint, woodburning, and other mediums, and now applies that expression and individuality to the violins she builds.

Michelle has innovated new techniques to improve the depth and power of the bass of violins while maintaining a crisp, vibrant upper register. Her violins have been praised for their tone and also boast improved resonance, projection, and response. Her violins often include artistic woodburned details and unique finishes along with their beautiful sound.
